Barbecue, concert to raise funds for Salem band

Thursday, October 24, 2002

To help raise money for the Salem High School Band, the Salem VFW Post 9777 and Ladies' Auxiliary and Salem Lodge 418 F&AM will hold a barbecue and band concert Oct. 26 at the Salem VFW on Highway 395.

Gene Maguffee, VFW Post 9777 member, said the post and the band will sell 400 tickets at a cost of $5 per person. If the event is a sellout $2,000 will be raised for the band.

The dinner will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at $5 per person with all proceeds going to the band. The fund-raiser is to help the band with expenses for their trip to the Great American Music Festival in Disney World scheduled for the Spring of 2004.

An outdoor band concert will be held at 6:15 p.m. at the gazebo next to the Veterans Wall of Honor.

A dedication ceremony will be held prior to the concert for the addition of a second memorial wall with 149 bricks.

Maguffee said this event is being held as a special thank you to the band for their performance at the Memorial Day dedication ceremony for the Veterans Wall of Honor. He said even though the event was held during summer vacation every band member attended.
