Singer's daughter to lease restaurant

The daughter of Willie Nelson has signed a contract to lease the restaurant atop Turkey Mountain in Horseshoe Bend.

MRID Commissioner Jim Thompson informed the Horseshoe Bend City Council Feb. 17 Diana Nelson has experience in the restaurant business and she hopes to bring entertainment to the little theater located in the facility upstairs. Thompson said he thought Nelson had been in the restaurant business in Eureka Springs.

Thompson said he believes Nelson is on her way to Horseshoe Bend from Austin, Texas. Scenic Realtor agent Deanna Miller has been in contact with Nelson for the past two years in hopes of bringing her to the area. Thompson said Nelson has never been to Horseshoe Bend.

Thompson said even though MRID has received a signed contract from Nelson it has yet to receive a deposit. He added if the Nelson transaction is not completed there are two other parties who have shown an interest in leasing the building.

Mayor Bob Spear announced FEMA presented the city with a check in the amount of $10,593.10 to help with the cleanup from the December ice story. Spear said the city should receive an additional 12.5 percent from the state through the disaster program.

Twin Contractors is in the final stages of planning before construction of the new subdivision begins. Plans are almost complete for the proposed Phase 1 of the assisted living retirement area in the city.

Tri-County Recycling Center in Cherokee Village has requested a donation from the city in the amount of $2,278. Councilman Mike Turner said many organizations have presented requests to the city for donations and many did not receive the full amount of the request. Turner suggested a lower amount as a solution. George Florea agreed with Turner and said the money was not in the budget for the request. Erv Metzinger said he supported the request and recommended appropriating the full amount.

After much discussion the motion failed by lack of majority with two councilmen not present. Spear said the matter could be discussed at the March council meeting.

Councilman Will Robson requested changing the speed limit on North Bend Drive from the mobile home estate's entrance to the end. He suggested increasing the speed limit from 15 mph to 25 mph. Robson said the speed is too slow for a conventional vehicle to travel. Officer Mark Long agreed with Robson and said the speed was too slow. Long said, "I think it would be a very good idea to raise it up." The council approved the increase.
