John Alvin Bird, 82, of Cherokee Village, died Feb. 10, 2003, at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home. He was born to John Barnard and Martha Kletka Bird on Jan. 22, 1921, in New Carlisle, Ind.

He was a veteran of the Indiana Army Air Corps National Guard; worked as a clay modeler for Studebaker and then General Motors, retiring in 1989, as the director of the Exterior Design Department for Buick (the first generation Buick Riviera was among the designs).

He was a 3rd degree Master Mason. He married Lucille Pippin on June 28, 1997, in Cherokee Village.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille; a son, John William (Karen) Bird of Walled Lake, Mich.; daughters -- Patricia (Jim) Armstrong of Leakey, Texas, Dr. Pamela (Matthew) Bird-Farmer of Salem, Oregon, Dr. Jacqueline (William) Bird-Hamilton of Marquette, Mich.; and Lisa Bird Land of San Antonio, Texas; stepsons -- Donald Eugene (Karon) Joy of Lynchburg, Mo., Carl Thomas (Donna) Joy of Villa Park, Ill., and Dale Edward (Diane) Joy of Kila, Mont.; stepdaughters -- Linda Beryl (Allen) Davenport of Brolinbrook, Ill. and Judith Kay Joy of Westmont, Ill.; 29 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Fred (Elizabeth) Bird of Kissimmee, Fal.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lawana Bird.

A memorial service was held Feb. 15 at First United Methodist Church in Cherokee Village. Interment was in the Columbarium of the First United Methodist Church in Cherokee Village with arrangements under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Mountain Home.
