Glencoe woman gives birth on bridge

Thursday, January 2, 2003

A Glencoe woman gave birth to a 6-pound, 4.7-ounce baby girl on the Veteran's Memorial Bridge across Lake Norfork near Henderson Dec. 30.

Sharla French went into labor late Sunday night and one of her friends drove her to get medical attention. As the two headed to Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, French's labor pains grew closer together. When they arrived in Elizabeth, the friend called the hospital and paramedics were dispatched as the two continued toward their destination.

Paramedics Debbie McClung and Dave Merkle met the two women and at 1:01 a.m. they delivered Brianna Hall.

McClung said, "We started to transport her, but within two minutes we realized it wasn't happening."

EMT Jenny Walker, who is also a registered nurse, helped deliver the baby. "That was an awesome day," said Walker. Henderson Fire Department also responded.

"Everything went smooth. The mother was fine, she did real good," McClung added.
