OREGON COUNTY -- Ozark Action Inc. (OAI) is conducting a Back to School Fair in August and it will cover five counties including Oregon County. According to an OAI spokesperson, the goal of the program is to supply low-income children in grades kindergarten through sixth grade with school supplies they are required to provide themselves.
The fair for Oregon County will be Aug. 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Alton Elementary School Multipurpose Building. This will be for children in the Alton, Couch, Koshkonong and Thayer school districts.
"As you may be aware, schools today do not furnish all the supplies children need. Imagine the embarrassment of those children in circumstances where the parents can't afford the supplies they need. Our hope is that helping these families bear the burden of the expense for the supplies will enhance the educational experience of the needy children. This program is funded by donations only. Any support can make this effort a success," said Paula Miller, OAI community service representative.
Some of the other services that will be offered are set up as booths with the following: Oregon County Health Department, sheriff's office, libraries, Division of Family Services, Missouri Department of Conservation, Child Support Enforcement Unit and University Extension.
School supplies will be distributed at the end of the fair. Parents may register by calling 417-778-7470.
Miller said any donations will be used to purchase supplies. They will be distributed to qualified families during the fair. She added that the contribution is tax deductible and that all donations stay in Oregon County.
Checks may be made payable and sent to: Ozark Action Inc P.O. Box 248, Alton, MO 65606.
