The Thayer Bobcats (8-0), currently ranked number nine in Class 2 hoops, celebrated their ascent into the state's top 10 with a 57-49 victory over the Alton Comets (7-2) Jan. 4, as the Cats repaid Alton for knocking them out of the district tournament finals last year.
Alton held a 14-12 lead after the first period of play, but Thayer outscored the Comets 16-8 in the second period to grab control of the contest.
Josh Wemlinger and Layne Hawkins paced Thayer with 18 points apiece, while Andrew Eckman added 10. Brett Ward chipped in eight, Aaron Henry two, and John Tollenaar one.
Alex Wiggs exploded for a game-high 25 points in the Comets' second loss of the year. Bryan Joiner followed with 15, and Justin Crews added nine for Alton.
