May 2 was observed as the National Day of Prayer across the country including Oregon County. Presiding Commissioner Leo Warren said the observance first began nationwide in 1952 and courthouse officials have observed it for many years. Warren and his brother, Clifford Warren, sang a couple of gospel and patriotic songs. Alton First Baptist Church Pastor Barry Phister led the service, and the prayer was given by Alton Assembly of God Pastor Fred Perkins. The presiding commissioner said it was important to him and the other commissioners, elected officials and employees at the courthouse to observe the National Day of Prayer because they believed in prayer. The Alton Ministerial Alliance presented another service at the courthouse that evening at 6:30 p.m.
