Shelby E. Smith, 86, of Sturkie, Ark., son of the late Clifford Ser-geant and Bessie Fannie (Jennings) Smith was born Dec. 19, 1915 at Quitman, Texas. He died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002 in Mtn. Home. He was married to Lillian M. Emery Oct. 3, 1959 at Arcata, Calif. He spent his working years as a husband, a spotter for a lumber industry, and a farmer. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, and received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star. He was a member of the Moko Church of Christ at Moko, Ark.Survivors include his wife, Lillian Smith of Viola; three sisters, Cliffie Lois Johannes and husband, Bob of Cincinnati, Ohio, Pauline Mariani of Bakersfield, Calif., and Lynne Hill and husband, Lynn of Dalhart, Texas; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Rudolph Jennings Smith and Richard Byron Smith; and one sister, Wilma Lee Poteet.Services were Monday, March 4, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the Barker Funeral Home Chapel in Salem, with Bro. Hillard Story officiating. Burial was in Stateline cemetery at Moko with arrangements under the direction of Barker Funeral Home of Salem.Pallbearers were John Emery, Colt Emery, Brad Schaufler, Ben Schaufler, Max Emery, and Kenneth Wiser.Memorials preferred to the Stateline Cemetery Association.
