Melbourne takes regional title

Thursday, February 28, 2002

The Melbourne Bearkatz have been on a roll lately. In addition to sweeping through conference play without breaking a sweat, the Bearkatz also claimed the district tournament two weeks ago.Fast forward to Feb. 23 and we find the Bearkatz in another tournament final, this one for the Class AA Region 3 title. The Bearkatz found themselves matched up with a familiar foe, the Mammoth Spring Bears.Meeting for the fifth time time this year, and the second time in a week, Mammoth Spring carried an 0-4 record against Melbourne into the championship round.Make it 0-5 on the year as the Bears fell 62-53 giving Melbourne the regional title.Junior Chad Milligan got the Bearkatz on the board with a conventional 3-point play to open the game.Senior Bearkat Patrick Davidson built the Melbourne lead to 7-3 as he turned a fast break into a 2-handed slam dunk. The Bears answered quickly on a long 3-pointer by senior Derek Todd to pull Mammoth Spring within 1, at 7-6, midway into the first period. The frantic pace continued through the end of the period as the Bearkatz used a pair of late buckets to lead 19-17 at the first period's end.The tempo slowed a bit in the second frame as Melbourne remained in front 31-21 at the 1:30 mark on a pullup jumper by junior Jordan Davidson. The frame ended on a positive note for the Bears as sophomore Seth Risner canned a trey with 30 seconds left to pull Mammoth Spring within 6, at 31-24.The third period belonged to Bearkat Patrick Davidson.Davidson posted 13 of his game high 27 points in the third as Melbourne held a 12-point advantage, 43-31 at the 3:19 mark. The Bears went on a mini-run of 11-5 behind senior Derek Todd to narrow the gap to 48-42 at the end of three.Mammoth Spring could not carry this momentum into the last period as the Bearkat advantage expanded back to 10 points en route to the 62-53 regional tournament crown. Both teams will next play in the state tournament pool.
