Brown joins U.S. Marine Corps

Thursday, February 14, 2002

Thomas James "T.J." Brown, son of Michael and Kristin Boggs of West Plains, a 2000 graduate of West Plains High School, has enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Brown will leave for Marine Corps Boot Camp in San Diego this month. While there he will be trained to excel at various weaponry. He will be trained in the ancient arts to be a lethal weapon with just the use of his bare hands alone, as well as in hand-to-hand combat. He will be schooled in Marine Corps customs and courtesies, intense physical fitness and drill, among other classes.Gunnery Sgt. "Gunny" Gibson, the West Plains Marine Corps recruiter, said recently in an interview "We are all very excited to have T.J. on board. He is an outstanding young man and I know he can go far in life. This is but a stepping stone that will open wide the door to his future and give him a great career, full benefits, 100 percent paid college tuition while in the Marine Corps in addition to $23,700 for the college or university of his choice. I know his local community will be very proud of him and will be watching to see what he does with his life and this great opportunity he has made for himself. It takes raw courage to step out and do something original instead of following the crowd. I am very proud of T.J."T.J.'s wife, Sara, and infant son, David Thomas, will continue to reside in Thayer while Brown is in boot camp. After graduation Brown will return home to Thayer on leave and then he will move onward to receive his formal schooling in his occupational specialty. His is but one of over 300 career opportunities that the U.S. Marine Corps has to offer.
