THAYER -- Matching funds for rural fire departments are being distributed by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) Forestry Division staff.
Thayer Volunteer Fire Department is among 136 fire departments to receive checks of up to $3,000 to help them with the purchase of personal protective gear and fire fighting equipment for natural cover fires as well as structure fires.
Mac Roberts from MDC presented Thayer fire chief Perry Turner with the funds last week.
The total funding for fire departments this year was approximately $220,000. Fire departments are required to match these funds which are provided by the U.S. Forest Service and the MDC. During the last 21 years over $3,220,000 has been distributed to rural fire departments to help them increase the safety of their firefighters and provide them with better firefighting equipment.
The Thayer VFD received $220 which they matched and used to buy two water pumps for their fire trucks.
