A Mount Pleasant teen died from head injuries he sustained during a four-wheeler accident July 29.
Jonathan Putensen, 18, was riding his Yamaha Warrior all-terrain vehicle when he lost control of the vehicle on County Road 75 in Izard County. He crossed the road, striking a tree head-on, said Charlie Melton, investigating officer of the Izard County Sheriff's Office.
Two of Putensen's friends were also riding four-wheelers when the accident occurred, but both were trailing behind him and neither witnessed the accident, Melton said.
His friends, Darrell Morrow, 20, of Sidney and Brian Fulbright, 20, of Mount Pleasant arrived shortly after the accident and found Putensen unconscious, Melton said.
Melton surmised Putensen was driving too fast when he came to a curve and slid on the gravel. He hit a rock in a ditch and the four-wheeler then hit the tree. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, Melton added.
Morrow and Fulbright traveled to a nearby residence and phoned 9-1-1, Melton said.
The Mount Pleasant Fire Department and Izard County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.
The victim was transported by Arkansas Emergency Transport to Batesville where he was met by the Air-Evac team. He was transported by helicopter to Elvis Presley Trauma Center in Memphis where he died the following day.
Melton said Putensen never regained consciousness.
