Vandals damage property inside Salem High

A copier machine was damaged at Salem High School Nov. 14 when a vandal put ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise into the machine, according to Salem Police Chief Albert Roork.

The vandals also threw food all around the kitchen and tore banners from the school's walls.

The vandals also sprayed black paint on custom-made drapes that hang from the stage where school plays are performed, Roork said.

Books and other items were yanked from unlocked lockers and thrown on the floors, he said.

The vandals also took fire extinguishers and sprayed the chemicals into the school's air vents.

And they made a mess in the teacher's lounge by throwing food and condiments on the furniture.

High School Principal Ken Rich reported the incident to the Salem Police Department after a cook discovered the damage Saturday morning, said Superintendent Bob Foster.

Roork said he thought the curtains were ruined, but Foster said he hopes they can be cleaned. The police chief said if the curtains have to be replaced it will be expensive.

Roork said, "There was no forced entry," but he declined comment on how the vandals entered the complex.

"We're going to put a lot of effort forth to resolve this," Roork added. He said the police department discovered unspecified evidence that could aid the investigation.

Foster said, "It could have been a lot worse. At this point we don't know the dollars and cents in damage that has been done." He said it would cost about $200 to $300 to repair the copier machine.

Most of the estimate will be in labor, Foster said. He added that he hopes the furniture in the teachers' lounge can be cleaned to avoid replacement costs.

Foster, Rich, school cooks and the custodian spent Saturday cleaning up the mess, Foster said.

Foster said he didn't know if the damage was done by a student, a former student, or someone outside of the school.
