The Highland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4772 and Auxiliary sponsored a national essay contest designed to give seventh and eighth grade students the opportunity to use their writing skills and abilities to voice their opinion on the theme "My Dream for America."
About 150 students from Highland and Williford schools participated in the program. The judges for the contest had to narrow the winning essays to three from each school. The winners with their families were treated to dinner. Awards were presented at the Highland VFW Post at its regular meeting Dec. 9.
Post Commander Rodger Pohler presented a certificate and check to each of the winners from Highland seventh grade students: Jessica Perez, first place; Amanda Gay, second place; and Savannah Harris, third place.
Phyllis Gatewood, VFW auxiliary treasurer and program chairman, presented checks and certificates to Williford eighth grade students: Jessica Wess, first place; Sasha Terrell, second place; and Chamble Ward, third place. Gatewood also presented certificates to their teachers, Kim Evans of Highland and Barbara Wess of Williford, for a job well done and for encouraging students to participate in the program.
Winning essays were forwarded on to Arkansas VFW District 2 for judging. Wess' essay took first place in district and was forwarded to VFW Department of Arkansas in Little Rock for state competition judging. Gay's essay took third place in district judging.
