Robert Lee McGriff Sr., son of the late Willie Fate McGriff and Alma Cathryn Kelley McGriff, was born on Feb. 22, 1930, in Leake County, Miss. He died Dec. 23, 2003, in Calico Rock, Ark., at the age of 73 years. He served in the United States Army from 1948 to 1970, retiring with the rank of sergeant. During his time in the Army, he served in Korea and Vietnam. He spent 20 years as a self-employed truck driver. Robert married Daisy Bittiner on April 5, 1991, in Melbourne, Ark. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Daisy McGriff of the home; eight daughters -- Frances Johnson of Carthage, Miss., Linda Moore of Carthage, Miss., Diann Bevel of Cold Water, Miss., Teresa Wilcher of Carthage, Miss., Ruthann Pulver of Wierton, W.Va., Lisa Wright of Chester, W.Va., Judy Pulver of Imerial, Pa., and Tammy Rogers of Melbourne; two sons -- Robert Lee McGriff Jr., of Jefferson, Texas, and Eddie Wayne McGriff of Carthage, Miss.; two sisters -- Willie Merle Rhodes of Mena, Ark., and Billie Cathryn Bell of Calico Rock; a brother, Edker McGriff of Jefferson, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Billy McGriff.
The funeral was Dec. 26 at the Roman and Billy Howard Memorial Chapel in Melbourne with Larry Strope officiating. Burial was in the Wises Chapel Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Eddie's Family Funeral Home in Melbourne.
Pallbearers were Michael Lee, Danny Moore, Shane Rogers, Jerry Sumner, Brandon Spears and Bill Wright.
