Alton VFD gets gift

Thursday, August 21, 2003

OREGON COUNTY -- The Alton Volunteer Fire Department has received a very special gift that will be used in auto rescues, equipment known as "Jaws of Life."

The gift came through a mutual agreement between the BB Road Volunteer Fire Department, which owns the equipment, and the Alton department.

The BB Road Fire Department received this equipment as a gift about two years ago. Both departments have used it for training. The members of the BB Road Department decided the equipment could be better utilized if it were more centrally located in the county. The department voted to loan the Jaws of Life to the Alton Fire Department. It is the department's hope that this tool will be used to help rescue someone trapped and that being located in the center of the county will make it more available.

The Alton department is fixing up a rescue truck with all the equipment needed and, through mutual agreements with the BB Road, Thomasville and Rover fire departments, will be available for anywhere in the northern part of the county.
