OREGON COUNTY -- Local volunteers last week began the task of painting the Glimpes house that will be the new home of the Oregon County Historical Society.

The house is located on Second Street in Thayer across from the post office and is the former home of Minnie Lee Glimpes. The house is believed to have been built in 1883.

The historical society recently elected officers. they are: Ernie Mainprize, president; Dores Ward, vice president; Mary Lee Pease, secretary; Mildred McCormack, treasurer; and Mildred Cornelius, fund-raiser chairman.

All interested in the history of the county are invited to join the group. Dues are $10 a month.

After the renovation of their new home the historical society will be moving and is currently excepting donations in any form to help with the renovation whether it be labor or materials.

Once moved the society will be looking for historical and interesting documents to fill the house. according to historical society member Mildred Cornelius, the house will be used to preserve and display documents. It will not be museum of artifacts.

Some of the other items that will be needed include a copy machine, shelving and displaying cases.

Anyone interested in donating or joining the Oregon County Historical Society can call Cornelius at 264-7794 or Dorothy Ellis at 625-3635.
