Lady Cougars' control problems costly in loss at Highland

Thursday, April 17, 2003

The Highland Lady Rebels won a pair of games from the ICC Lady Cougars in fast-pitch action April 10, taking advantage of the Lady Cougars' control problems on the mound in the third inning to win game one 9-5, then withstanding a furious fifth-inning ICC rally to come out on top of the second game 19-14.

ICC started game one by picking up a pair of runs off Lady Rebel starter Ashley Butler in the top of the first on a two-RBI base hit by Jamie Wood that scored Ariel and Chelsie Yancey.

The Lady Cougars made it 3-0 in the second inning on a short blooper to right from Mindy Helm that brought Ariel Yancey in to score her second run of the game.

Highland notched their first run of the game in the home half of the second as Lauren Long punched an RBI single through the infield that plated Angie Nicholson.

After Butler retired the Lady Cougars without incident in the top of the third, the Lady Rebels cashed in big in the bottom of the frame.

With the bases full of Lady Rebels, Ariel Yancey walked Butler to bring in the first Highland run of the third.

Jamie Wood came in on relief for Yancey and gave up a walk to Lauren Long that was good for another Highland run.

Erica Watts picked up a conventional RBI on a single that scored Nicholson before Highland plated three more walked-in runs to grab a 7-3 lead after three innings.

ICC drew closer in the fourth as Ariel Yancey brought Mandy Haney around to score on a single to center field.

Yancey scored the Lady Cougars' second run of the inning as she later came home on an attempted pickoff.

Highland immediately got those two runs back in the bottom of the fourth as Michelle Scholz posted a two-RBI single that scored Butler and Lauren Long to give the Lady Rebels a 9-5 victory.

Angie Nicholson led the Lady Rebels with a double, while Lauren Long and Scholz had two RBIs each.

Ariel Yancey and Mandy Haney paced ICC with two doubles and two base hits.

In game two, the Lady Rebels took a huge lead early before staving off a big Lady Cougar comeback late in the game.

Lindsey Long put the Lady Rebels on the board first as a bases-loaded walk to Nicholson brought her in to score.

A fielder's choice by Butler was good for an RBI as Kristen Young scored, and Amber Snyder came home on a wild pitch, making it a short outing for ICC starter Chelsie Yancey.

The last Highland run of the first inning came via Nicholson's steal of home, giving the Lady Rebels a quick 4-0 lead.

Wood posted ICC's first RBI of game two in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly that brought Chelsie Yancey home, and Haney added run number two as she swiped home plate on a botched pick off attempt.

Undaunted, the Lady Rebels picked up five more runs in the top of the second to go on top 9-2.

Snyder started things off with a infield hit that scored Lindsey Long and Nicholson dropped a base hit to center, scoring Young.

Nicholson then came home on a single from Butler, before the last two Highland runs came in on a pair of bases-loaded walks.

The top of the third saw Highland tack three more runs onto their lead beginning with a fielder's choice by Lauren Long that brought Nicholson in.

The big hit of the inning went to Erica Watts as she slammed a two-RBI triple, scoring Butler and Kaci French.

ICC picked up a run in the bottom of the third on a fielder's choice RBI by Chelsie Yancey, but they still trailed 12-3 after three.

The score soon turned into a 19-3 Highland lead as the Lady Rebels struck for seven runs in the fourth.

Lindsey Long scored the first Lady Rebel run as she stole home.

Nicholson followed that by blasting a triple to the gap in left that plated Young and French.

Next up, Samantha Clegg drove a single to right that sent Nicholson home.

Highland's scoring spree ended with three more walked-in runs as they move in front 19-3.

The Lady Cougars weren't exactly finished as they made things interesting by scoring 11 runs in the last two innings.

A pair of bases-loaded walks started the fourth for ICC by bringing in two runs before Chelsie Yancey knocked in Kayla Grinnell and Haney with a single to make the score 19-7, Highland, after four.

After shutting the Lady Rebels out in the top of the frame, ICC fired off seven runs in the bottom of the frame.

An RBI single from Wood got things going for ICC, and Haney followed up with a base hit that plated Wood and Brandi Moser.

The next two-RBI hit went to Ariel Yancey as she hit a deep ball to center before Chelsie Yancey hit an even deeper ball to center that was good for an inside the park homer, scoring two Lady Cougar runs.

The ICC rally ended short as a groundout closed the game with Highland winning 19-14.

Angie Nicholson had a triple and four RBIs for Highland, while Erica Watts added two RBIs on a triple, and Lauren Long posted a double and RBI.

Chelsie Yancey paced ICC with a single, home run, and five RBIs, while Mandy Haney logged three RBIs on a pair of hits.
