Greyhounds caught by Midland Mustangs

Wednesday, April 10, 2002

The Salem Greyhounds traveled to Pleasant Plains on April 5 to take on the Midland Mustangs in non-conference baseball action.

The Mustangs broke open a close game in the middle innings to emerge with a 10-6 victory.

Midland logged the first run of the game in the home-half of the first inning.

A base hit to center field on the first pitch of the game off Greyhound starter Justin Brown led to an RBI and a 1-0 Midland lead after one.

Brown found himself in a jam in the bottom of the second as the Mustangs padded their lead with four more runs.

A standup double started things off for Midland.

A dropped fly ball and base hit through the gap at shortstop loaded the bases for the Mustangs.

Midland took advantage of this situation by bringing in a run on a sacrifice fly.

The next two Mustang runs crossed the plate on back-to-back balks called on Brown, giving Midland a 5-0 lead after two.

The Greyhounds were not about to be shut out as they exploded for five runs in the top of the third.

Michael Innis started off the Salem third by banging the first Greyhound hit of the game, a single up the middle of the diamond.

After a strikeout, Tate Zeigler deposited a Mustang pitch into right field for a base hit.

The first Greyhound RBI went to Kyle Estes as he brought Innis home on a hard shot past third base.

Next up for Salem, Mark Allen worked a full count into a walk, loading the bases for Cody Curtis.

Curtis jumped all over a fastball, ripping it past second base and scoring Zeigler and Estes.

The Greyhounds put the topping on their big inning as Chris Youngblood hammered a pitch that earned him two RBIs, scoring Allen and Curtis, and knotting the game at 5-all.

The even game was short-lived as Midland used a fielder's choice and sacrifice fly to plate two runs in the bottom of the third for a 7-5 lead.

The Greyhounds threatened to have another big inning in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded and two outs.

A groundout ended this opportunity, leaving the bags full of Greyhounds.

Midland expanded their lead in the bottom of the sixth as three more runs crossed the plate to put the Mustangs up 10-5 after six.

The Greyhounds added one more run to their total in the top of the seventh as Chris Youngblood collected his third RBI of the game on a base hit.

The game ended with Midland on top 10-6.

Chris Youngblood led the Greyhounds at the plate with three hits and three RBIs.

Cody Curtis added two RBIs on one hit for Salem.
