Missing man's body found

Thursday, August 18, 2005

The body of an elderly Shannon County man who was missing for two weeks was found Aug. 14 by officers with the Oregon County Sheriffs Office.

Chief Deputy Eric King and other officers were searching just north of the Oregon/ Shannon County line late Sunday evening when he spotted Sanford Hodges' truck.

"We located the truck on Forest Service Road 4231 in Shannon County at 7:40 p.m.," King said. He said Hodges was lying approximately 15 feet from his truck.

"There appeared to be no foul play involved. We are fairly confident the Shannon County coroner will rule the death as caused by natural causes," he said.

Hodges, 89, disappeared July 31. He was last seen at Argo's Trading Post just north of Alton.

King said the area where Hodges was found was two or three miles into Shannon County from Oregon County. He said nothing appeared to have been tampered with in Hodges' truck.

Hodges made routine trips into Alton and Oregon County.

The last few years he had suffered from health problems, and officers think that may have led to his death.
