The 2002 Salem Chamber of Commerce Annual Radio Auction proceeds totaled around $9,500, Hans Oliver, chamber president said.
Oliver said the auction is the main fund-raiser of the year. The event was held the week of March 25. The money from the donated items is used to help support the local economy and to help increase community spirit.
Oliver said proceeds last year were used for many community projects; annual Christmas parade, lighting contest and decorations; the Fourth of July fireworks display at the city park; two annual $500 scholarships to Salem High School seniors; city of Salem Web page which lists all of the chamber members and informs the public about local events and local economy; annual chamber banquet; and donations to local sport teams.
This year the chamber is adding the Salem Welcome Center to its list of community responsibilities, Oliver said. Approximately $5,500 will be used to operate the facility that will promote Salem to tourists passing through.
The Welcome Center will be open to offer the community another meeting room for civic groups.
