Assault charges dropped

Thursday, June 16, 2005

CARTER COUNTY -- An assault charge has been dropped against the wife of a man accused of killing Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Dewayne Graham Jr.

Coree Shockley, 23, of Van Buren was charged with assault after she allegedly went to the home of Carter County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Ligons.

Shockley was bound over for trial on tampering with evidence charges in the Graham case when she went to Ligons' home. Ligons called authorities after seeing Shockley leave his driveway and the law enforcement officer who responded concluded she had gone to the Ligons home to "threaten or alarm" the prosecutor.

The assault charge was dismissed last week by special prosecuter Steve Lynxwiler, the prosecuting attorney for Ripley County. Several attempts were made to reach Lynxwiler to find out why the charge had been dismissed and he never returned the calls.

Daily American Republic newspaper reporter Michele Fredrick reported last week that Shockley's attorney, Dewayne Hackworth of Piedmont, told the Republic that he had an opinion about why the charge was dismissed but declined to say what it is. The Republic is in Poplar Bluff.

The tampering charge against Shockley stems from allegedly removing ammunition from the home she shared with her husband, Lance Shockley. Lance Shockley, 28, is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in Graham's death. Graham was found shot to death in the driveway of his home March 20.

Investigators think Lance Shockley killed the state trooper after an investigation by Graham focused on Shockley as a suspect in a hit-and-run accident in Carter County in which Jeffrey Bayless was killed.

The slain trooper's former in-laws, Junior and Donna Roberts, live at Gatewood.
