THAYER - Officers with the Thayer Police Department announced last week that recently they have been investigating several instances of the theft of street signs and the vandalism of new sidewalks in the city.
Officer Frank Bernard said this is the second time the recently poured cement sidewalks have been damaged. He said the first instance happened just after the new concrete was poured in front of Chestnut Inn. Last week a second report of sidewalk vandalism has occurred in front of Forschler's Home and Auto in Thayer. Bernard said it looked as though someone had taken something and wrote in the cement while it was still wet. He said Leatherwood Construction which is doing the sidewalk work in the city estimated it would cost $590 to repair the cement.
Bernard said that several road signs have also been stolen in the area including one at the Thayer Special Road District. Also, a sign at Fourth and Walnut streets in Thayer and two others from two other locations in the city has been stolen.
The officer said he believes several people are involved in the sign theft and it is still under investigation.
