Boldly Going Nowhere

Eleven-Eleven

A mysterious phenomenon, often referred to as eleven-eleven, has been slowly creeping into the lives of certain individuals all over the world. For me, it started over 20 years ago.
In the summer of 1980, I was living in Los Angeles, working computer programming contracts and writing screenplays in my spare time, trying to break into the movie business.
Normally a night owl, I went to bed early one night, at about 9 p.m.
I was sleeping soundly when all of a sudden I awoke and sat upright as if lifted by some invisible force. Then my head slowly turned to the left, again as if it were compelled to do so by some unknown force, until I was staring at my digital clock. The clock read 11:11. It seemed to remain frozen in position for much longer than a minute before it advanced to 11:12. Whatever had just happened was beyond my control and comprehension. I stayed up the rest of the night trying to make sense of it.
The next morning at work, I was sitting at my desk keying some code into a computer terminal when, for absolutely no reason, I turned around and glanced at the digital clock on the far wall of the office. Once again, it was 11:11 and remained so far too long. Generally, I'm not a clock-watcher. In fact, I never even wear a watch.
For the next several weeks, I noticed every time a digital clock struck 11:11. No matter where I was or what I was doing, this would inevitably happen. Needless to say, this was starting to freak me out. I even replaced my original clock with a brand new one in case there might have been some sort of inaudible sound coming from the original clock at precisely 11:11 a.m. and 11:11 p.m. triggering me to glance at the source of the sound.
Also during this period of time, I began to have precognitive dreams where my dreams would come true about 2-3 days later. For example, I had a dream about a woman with dark curly hair who had a dog that had four puppies -- three white males and a black female. Three days later, I was introduced to a new employee at work with dark curly hair. During my conversation with her, she told me how excited she was because the previous evening her dog had given birth to four puppies -- three white males and a black female.
I had countless such dreams, in much greater detail, too many to be coincidence. Dreaming is a vast topic that I may get into in a subsequent column, but suffice it to say my whole world was turning upside down.
After a few months of eleven-eleven experiences and precognitive dreams, my whole life changed. I began to cut back on computer contracts and gave up screenwriting to write novels. Naturally, my first novel, The Dogman of Topanga, would be about eleven-eleven and precognitive dreaming.
Part of my desire to write a novel about eleven-eleven was to try to find out if this weirdness was also happening to others. The few people I talked to about this subject all assumed I had recently escaped from a padded cell. By the time the novel was published years later, my agent had convinced me to remove most of the metaphysical events, which she assumed were of no commercial value, and turn it into a suspense mystery.
When the World Wide Web began to blossom a few years ago, I discovered that I wasn't the only eleven-eleven crackpot on this planet. In fact, there was even a colony of eleven-eleven crackpots, located in Eureka, Mont. They spent a lot of time performing dance circles (in white robes, eleven to a circle) and bizarre rituals meant to open the 11:11 Cosmic Gateway. If that's what it takes to reach the next level, I'll stay behind and guard the beer supply. Today, this group is no longer in Montana but has 150,000 members worldwide.
I searched "11:11" on the Internet again this week. I got 2,520,000 hits. Apparently, tons of people have now had eleven-eleven experiences. It appears that most of them are also wondering what it means. The consensus opinion seems to be that it is some sort of subconscious cosmic/spiritual wake-up call. Another theory is that the entire human race is going through an increase in the intuitive process. No one seems to know for sure.
I may be a nut case, but it's nice to learn that I'm not the only one.
