THAYER â€" Thayer Fun and Friends Senior Citizen Center is searching for a good used van with low mileage and in good working order for their home delivered meal program.
Fun and Friends Director Sheila Smith said the center currently has six vehicles in use at the center.
Smith said five of them are used for delivering meals in and around the Thayer area. "Our best van right now has over 100,000 miles, and we desperately need another vehicle to help with our meal delivery," Smith said.
The center serves an average of 368 meals a day and drives approximately 1,100 miles a month delivering meals. The coverage area is in and around Thayer, including Gatewood, Koshkonong, Couch and Shelby Town.
The home delivered meal program at the center is funded by the Older Americans Act of 1965 and overseen by the Southwest Missouri Office on Aging (SWMOA)
SWMOA's main office is in Springfield. The office represents 17 counties in southern Missouri and offer many programs, including education, socialization and recreation, IRS certified tax assistance, advocacy for elder rights and employment assistance.
Smith said a person must be 60 years or older to participate in the meal program. She said volunteers are always needed to help deliver the meals in the Thayer area.
Anyone interested in helping deliver meals at the center or who has a vehicle that could help with the meal delivery can call Smith or Sue Scott at the center at 417-264-7354, Monday through Friday.
