ALTON -- The Alton Culture Club will hold a groundbreaking ceremony March 23 to start its sidewalk project. The groundbreaking will be at 12:30 p.m. at the Alton Senior Citizen Center.

Alton Culture Club President Tammy Curtis said 125 feet of sidewalk is missing between two approaches to the center and another 52 feet is missing above the upper approach to the center and the post office.

Curtis said her club is working on a project to help build the sidewalk back. "Anyone or any business interested can become involved in the project by making a $100 donation. By making a pledge or donation at the Alton Bank to the Culture Club fund, a person or business can have their named engraved in a 5-feet by 3-feet portion of the sidewalk or have their name on a 6-inch buffer along the sidewalk," Curtis said.

She said in order to meet ADA requirements the sidewalk has to be 5 feet wide.

Thus far, the club has collected $3,730 toward the project; Curtis said $4,500 is needed to complete the sidewalk.

Curtis also said the club entered a nationwide contest sponsored by the General Federation of Women's Clubs. "First the sidewalk project enters at the state level. If we should win there, we will go on to enter the national competition and a chance to win $5,000," she said.

Curtis said the entire community is encouraged to come to the groundbreaking ceremony. "We need the community and public support for this project to be a success," she said.
