While the cool temperatures and breezy winds might have deterred the faint of spirit, several hundred dedicated fans endured the wind until the sun set. Then with a full moon in sight, the temperatures did challenge the most loyal of fans.
But the drivers were certainly not discouraged as they eagerly competed in the TCI Automotive sponsored program April 23 at West Plains Motor Speedway.
In the IMCA Modified feature event Chris Piper of West Plains scored his second win of the season. It was a very close feature finish with Kevin Salter of Batesville taking second place, followed by Billy Romans of West Plains, Shawn Walsh of Ash Flat and Brandon Ball of Koshkonong. During the IMCA Modified qualifying, Jimmy "Pappy" Leonard of Ravenden made hard contact with the front straight-away wall and was transported to Ozarks Medical Center. He later relayed his appreciation to the on-site medical team and officials for their quick and efficient care. He also thanked his fellow racers for their assistance in getting his car loaded. Leonard will be sidelined for a few weeks but plans to be back as soon as possible. Stan Ellison scored another feature win this week in the Super Stock division. Rounding out the top five were Dave Wallace of Theodosia, Mo., Todd Kelly of Birch Tree, Bill Dixon of Thayer and Dee Kelly of Birch Tree. Chuck Russell of West Plains made a return appearance on Victory Lane after winning the Hobby feature during the TCI sponsored event. Taking second was Rick Cooper of Thornfield, followed by Tyson Troutman of Houston, Marty Toten of Pomona, and Bobby Ratterree of Mountain Grove, Mo. In the Cruiser feature, Scott North of Willow Springs, Mo., also scored another feature win, followed by Jason Johnson of Hardy, Bobby Skinner of Moody, Mo., Shane Hitt of Birch Tree, Mo., and Rocky Bowlin of Houston, Mo.
