Two more charged in trooper's murder

Friday, April 29, 2005

AREA -- Two more suspects have been charged in connection with the death of Missouri State Trooper Carl D. Graham. Sherry Chilton Keeney, 52, has been charged with tampering with evidence, and Cynthia Chilton, 32, has been charged with perjury. Keeney is Coree Shockey's mother and Chilton is Shockley's sister. Coree Shockley was charged last week with tampering with evidence in the Graham investigation.

The tampering charge against Keeney stems from a recorded conversation between Lance Shockley's uncle, Robert Shockley, and Keeney and Coree Shockley about the March 20 delivery of a box of ammunition from Shockley to Robert Shockley. Lance Shockley was charged March 29 with first degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Trooper Graham. Also, authorities said Coree Shockley's and Lance Shockley's fingerprints were on the ammunition box.

Keeney reportedly told Robert Shockley, "I don't know, I guess if you go home, wipe it off," and "It's about the only thing you can do." It is that statement that led to the tampering with evidence charge against Keeney, authorities said.

In testimony March 15, Chilton reportedly said she had not talked to Lance Shockley about a fatality crash or given a statement to lawmen. The prosecution presented evidence that this was not true. This is where the perjury charge against Chilton comes from, authorities said.

Lawmen say Lance Shockley shot Graham to stop an investigation into the November 2004 crash that claimed the life of Carter County resident Jeff Bayless. The driver had fled the scene and the trooper's investigative paperwork shows he suspected Lance Shockley was the driver. On March 23 Lance Shockley was charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

Lance Shockley has been charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Graham. Coree Shockley has been charged with tampering and a new charge of assault. The assault charge stems from an incident last week. Coree Shockley was reportedly seen in Carter County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Ligon's driveway in a vehicle March 15. He said he thinks she was trying to threaten and harm him.
