THAYER -- Fifteen Thayer Elementary School students will attend the Young Authors Conference in West Plains sponsored by Southwest Missouri State University. The 15 students received the honor to attend the conference because they placed first in the Young Author Competition at Thayer Elementary School.
According to local Young Author coordinator Shane Baker, the guest author for this year's conference will be Rike Lipe. Baker said Ripe is the author of several books for young readers.
He said the conference is held every year. "The conference provides an opportunity for young authors to receive honors for their individual accomplishments. It also provides an opportunity for the selected authors to proudly represent their fellow authors from their home schools," Baker said.
Baker has coordinated the program at Thayer School for many years. "We use this conference to encourage classroom teachers and school administrators to provide opportunities and motivate children to create written work. It also gives students in south-central Missouri the opportunity to have their written accomplishments published," Baker said.
Baker also serves as a group leader at the conference. He is a member of the South Central Ozarks Council of the International Reading Association, which helps with the conference.
