Hazel Alma "Tommy" Humphreys, 87, of Thayer, Mo., was born Sept. 25, 1917, in Oregon County, Mo., was the daughter of the late James Barnett Powell and Addie E. Bonds Powell. She died July 11, 2005, in Alton, Mo.
She was united in marriage to Chester B. Humphreys on Oct. 17, 1948, in Bolivar, Mo. He preceded her in death Oct. 11, 1973.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Mammoth Spring, Ark., where she served on the church board for many years.
She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Thayer Chapter, serving as treasurer and was Past Worthy Matron.
She worked for many years as an assistant to her husband at Franz Foods. Later, she did flower design and then worked at the State License Bureau.
At age 73, Tommy retired to enjoy friends and family while remaining active in church and community.
Tommy always made sure that flowers were ordered and delivered for her neighborhood to honor deceased friends.
She was active in Fun and Friends Senior Center in Thayer and enjoyed all activities. Besides being a homemaker she was a graduate of Draughon Business College in Springfield, Mo.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be sorely missed by her family and many friends.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Shepards View Residential Care Facility, Alton, Mo., Shady Oaks Healthcare, Thayer, Mo., as well as Riverways Hospice in West Plains, Mo.
Survivors include two sons -- Powell David Humphreys and wife, Anita, of Thayer, and Allan Boone Humphreys and wife, Becca of Ozark, Mo.; six grandchildren -- Michelle Thomason and husband, Joe of Weldon Springs, Mo., Brent P. Humphreys and wife, Erica of Bolivar, Trenton Smith and wife, Sarah of Godfrey Ill., Tannith Smith of Jerseyville, Ill., Nathan Humphreys of Ozark, Mo., and Kristen Humphreys of Ozark, Mo.; five great-grandchildren -- Graham, Samantha, Joshua, Anna, Tyler and one unborn great-grandchild; one son-in-law, Terry L. Smith of Brighton, Ill.; a sister, Mary "Bonds" Wise and husband, George of Warsaw, Mo.; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Chalma Beth Smith; three brothers -- Hurchel, George and D. Norman Powell and two sisters -- Berniece Irene "Bill" Clark, and Tommie's twin sister, Hallie Alpha "Dick" Wheeler.
The funeral service was held on July 14, at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer, Mo., with the Rev. Bruce Anderson and the Rev. Betty Anderson officiating.
Burial was in the Thayer Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of the Carter Funeral Home Inc. of Thayer, Mo.
