Gerald Ford "Jerry" Knapp, 87, of Cherokee Village died May 16, 2004, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Born Nov. 17, 1916, in Pleasantville, Iowa, he was the son of Walter Ford Knapp and Mable Travis Knapp. He married Jeane Sprow in Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1960. He was retired from the banking industry. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Gladbrook, Iowa. He was mayor of Garwin, Iowa, and president of the local school board in Garwin. He was also the fire chief of Garwin and worked for the Iowa Highway Patrol. While living in Cherokee Village, he was a member of the Highland Elks Lodge, Cherokee Village Lions Club, Cherokee Village Men's Golf Association, Spring River Shrine Club and Cherokee Village United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife Jeane S. Knapp of the home; a son, Patrick Dale Harris of Des Moines, Iowa; a daughter, Holly L. Kruger and husband, Dennis, of Dike, Iowa; two sisters -- Louise Debler of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Joyce Walter of Toledo, Iowa; five grandchildren -- Katie Harris Hammer of Steamboat, Colo., Stacy and Heidi Kruger of Fort Collins, Colo., Noel Knapp Verbeek of Ferndale, Mich., and Laurel Knapp of Chicago.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons -- Bobby Lee Knapp and Neil S. Harris; a daughter, Dixie Jorgensen; a sister, Bonnie Sullivan; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service with Masonic rites was May 21 at Cherokee Village United Methodist Church. Officiating was the Rev. Waymond Hollis, Joan Ewaldsen, the Rev. Stan Jagow, and Patrick Harris of St. John's Basilica in Des Moines, Iowa.
Following the service everyone gathered at Cherokee Village Country Club.
Arrangements were under the direction of Tri-County's Cherokee Chapel of Highland.
