Missing man found dead in creek

Thursday, May 27, 2004

Staff Writer

The search for a missing man ended tragically May 19 when his body was pulled from the Little Piney Creek near the Antioch Church, east of Zion.

According to Izard County Sheriff Joe Martz, the body of Denver Clay Hawkins, 56, of Zion was recovered by members of the Cherokee Village Fire and Rescue Department.

Authorities began searching the creek for Hawkins when his 2000 model Saturn was found May 17 submerged in the creek about 200 yards from a low water bridge.

Officers and emergency personnel from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and dive team, Zion Fire Department, Izard County OES, Oxford Fire Department, Calico Rock Fire Department, and Marked Tree Fire Department all assisted in the search. The Arkansas Department of Corrections used its dog team, and Baxter County provided a helicopter to help searchers.

A press release issued by the Izard County Sheriff's Office said Hawkins was last seen at 8:30 p.m. May 14.

Martz said Hawkins lived near the creek and the water in the creek was high the weekend of his disappearance.

Martz said there was no evidence of foul play but the investigation is continuing. Hawkins' body was sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy. The preliminary results were not available at press time.
