The Salem Greyhounds opened play in the senior boys' division of the 2005 Izard County Invitational Tournament at the Cougars' Den in Brockwell by displacing the Calico Rock Pirates 56-40 Jan. 22.

The second-seeded Greyhounds just had too much firepower, running in groups of five players at a time, for the undermanned Pirates, who had just six players available for battle.

The seventh-seeded group from Calico Rock did hold a brief 6-5 lead early in the first before Salem grabbed control behind back-to-back hoops from Mike Innis (eight points).

Up 13-9 after the first period, the Hounds outscored Calico Rock 10-5 in the second to take a 23-14 lead at the half.

Chris Turner opened the third period for the Pirates by slipping inside for a pair of hoops that sliced Salem's lead to 23-18. Turner paced Calico Rock with a game-high 22 points on the afternoon.

Phillip Taylor (11 points) found success in the third with seven points, helping his squad to a 44-28 advantage after three.

The fourth period turned into a 12-all draw, and the Greyhounds went on to top Calico Rock by 16 points.

Kyle Estes tallied 11 points for Salem, while Jeff Nelson and Seth Lindbloom hit for six points each. Wes James and Dusty York added three points apiece, with Lance Powell, Devin Bozeman, James Lowerie and Joe Fowler posting two points each.

Adam Green logged six points for Calico Rock, with Marcus Orf and Jonathan Moss adding four points apiece. Tony Vrendenburg tallied one point for the Pirates.

The Greyhounds (9-10, 5-4) dropped a 58-47 2AA-North contest to the Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds Jan. 21 in Imboden, victims of a 26-point night by Sloan's Cody Slusser.

Sloan-Hendrix led 16-8 after the first period, and extended its advantage to 30-17 at the half.

Chad Willett paced Salem with 12 points.

The Salem Lady Greyhounds (7-9, 5-4) started the night off with a 56-42 loss to Sloan-Hendrix.

Sloan-Hendrix turned a 26-15 halftime lead into a 38-26 advantage heading into the final period of play.

Carrie Johnson and Lairen Hall tossed in nine points apiece to lead Salem.
