A Melbourne man died Sept. 4 after falling 38 feet from the Piney Creek bridge north of Boswell in Izard County.
Travis McFarland, 20, died from injuries he sustained Sept. 2 after he fell and struck a log jam and trees that were lodged in a drift at the bridge, said Izard County Sheriff Joe Martz.
The official report is not in but Martz surmised the cause of death was due to trauma to the head and back.
Martz said McFarland, along with three friends, Seth Webb, Christine Cross and Tanya Turner, was driving in a vehicle when they decided to stop on the bridge.
McFarland climbed on a concrete curb on the bridge where he apparently lost his balance and fell over the rail, Martz said.
Webb jumped into the water to try to rescue McFarland and stayed with him until volunteers and first responders from Ruthie Mountain and Calico Rock fire departments arrived, Martz said.
The sheriff said the bridge was a "popular area for kids to hang out and swim."
McFarland was transported to Community Medical Center in Calico Rock and later transferred by helicopter to St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield, Mo.
