Bank robbery suspect in custody

Thursday, March 10, 2005

No charges have been filed

A suspect in the Feb. 18 bank robbery at the Bank of Salem in Mammoth Spring is in custody.

Gregory Conan, 48, was arrested March 3 in Lakeland, Fla., and is considered a "man of interest" in the Mammoth Spring bank robbery, said Lt. Bill Beach with the Arkansas State Police.

Conan had not been charged in connection with the bank robbery as of Monday.

"Our investigation into this matter is continuing," Beach said. "This person's involvement in the bank robbery is still yet to be completely determined."

Information developed in Arkansas led to Conan's arrest in Florida, Beach said.

A federal warrant for Conan's arrest was issued after he allegedly robbed a bank in Maryland, Beach said.

He said Arkansas authorities will have time to develop a case against Conan, if there is one, while he is being detained on federal charges.

Beach would not comment as to whether other persons besides Conan are under investigation.

"Some aspects of this case are being wrapped up," Beach said. "But until it's complete it would be premature to release information about an investigation when no charges have been filed."

Fulton County Sheriff Walter Dillinger said a slender, gray bearded man with a gun walked into the bank and demanded money at approximately 2:30 p.m. Feb. 18.

The bank robber took $2,650 from the bank and fled on foot, said Dillinger.

He said authorities set up roadblocks, employed search dogs from the North Central Unit in Calico Rock and searched the area with a helicopter on loan from the Baxter County Sheriff's Department in a fruitless attempt to catch the bank robber.

Dillinger said it is likely the bank robber had an accomplice who drove him away before the search began.

Investigators with Arkansas State Police, Fulton County Sheriff's Office and the Mammoth Spring Police Department have all contributed to the investigation.
