OC Dems set up Staples scholarship

Thursday, March 10, 2005

OREGON COUNTY -- The Oregon County Democratic Committee has announced that it will sponsor a new scholarship. One Oregon County senior will be the recipient of it this spring.

According to committee member Ellen Kauffman, the scholarship has been established in the name of long-time Missouri state Sen. Danny Staples. Staples, 68, died of a heart attack at his home in Eminence July 22, 2003.

Kauffman said businesses, organizations and individuals who would like to show appreciation for the service and work Staples did for Oregon County are invited to contribute to the scholarship fund.

She said donations may be made to the fund and the deadline for filing an application for the scholarship is March 15. Scholarship applications are in all four Oregon County schools and at the courthouse at Alton.

Staples, who was born and raised in neighboring Shannon County, served Oregon County for 26 years in the Missouri House of Representatives and the Missouri Senate.

While serving in the Missouri General Assembly, Staples served as chairman of the Joint Committee on Corrections. He also served as chairman of the Transportation Committee. He is remembered as being one of the greatest storytellers the Missouri Senate ever knew, scholarship organizers said.

Many residents in his district thought his colorful Ozark style set him apart from the other senators. "He was a fierce fighter for what he believed in and his opponents always knew where he stood," one scholarship organizer said.

Staples retired from the Senate in 2002 due to term limits.

Kauffman said anyone interested in contributing to the Danny Staples Memorial Scholarship Fund may do so by contacting her at 417-764-3640.
