The Salem High School Band finished second in its classification at the All American Music Festival Competition April 9 at Universal Studios in Florida.
Band Director Michael Cole said his band competed in the largest classification at the event. He said the band won a trophy and got a superior rating by the judges.
When the competition was over, band members enjoyed the many tourist attractions in the Orlando area, Cole said.
The band visited the Disney MGM studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot center.
Cole said the group's favorite place was Busch Gardens and the beach. He said they also enjoyed a medieval dinner theater that was complete with knights and a joust. "The kids really had a ball, just a great time," he said.
The band's program for the competition was "Emblem of Unity March" by J.J. Richards. The program included "Salvation is Created" by Tschesnokoff and "2nd Suite in F Movement 1 March and Movement 4 Phantasia on Dargazon" by Gustov Hulst.
Cole said the program is difficult and it was the musical piece they performed at regionals.
He said he was proud of his kids and the help from the community. "Without the band booster, this trip wouldn't have been possible," Cole said.
Participating in events like the All American Music Festival give students a chance to test their skills and perform under pressure, Cole said.
Cole said he hopes he and the band boosters will be able to take the band to more inter-state competitions in the future.
