Izard County tops Melbourne

Sarah Taylor pitched a seven-hitter and went three-for-four at the plate, including two RBIs, to lead the Izard County Lady Cougars to a 5-3 win over the Melbourne Lady Bearkatz at Melbourne on April 22.

The victory gave the Lady Cougars the conference championship with an 8-0 record, while the Lady Bearkatz fell to 6-2 in conference play.

Jenna Irgens went two-for-four with three RBIs and Trisha Arnold collected two hits.

For the Lady Bearkatz, Amanda Treat and Abby Cooper had two hits each and pitchers Maggie Cooper and Olivia Morris combined to allow nine hits and five runs with eight strikeouts.

The Lady Cougars have won two consecutive conference championships and are now 22-8 on the season.

In non-conference action, the Lady Cougars defeated Batesville Southside 3-2 at Oxford City Park on April 23 after splitting a doubleheader at Midland on April 21.

The Lady Cougars lost game one 2-1 despite Taylor's one-hitter, but came back to win game two 6-0 on another one-hitter by Taylor.

In game two, Trace Grinnell was two-for-two with two runs scored and Kailey Moss added three runs-batted-in for Izard County.
