A Jonesboro man drowned in the South Fork River near Hardy May 8 while trying to retrieve a fishing pole.
Emergency personnel recovered the body of Robert B. Grimm, 42, at approximately 10:15 a.m. May 9.
Witness Ken Murphee was sitting on his balcony overlooking the South Fork River near Indian Head Falls when he saw Grimm go under water and didn't resurface. Hardy Volunteer Fire Chief Lonnie Phelps said. Murphee called 9-1-1 around 7:25 p.m. May 8. Hardy volunteers responded at 7:29 p.m.
Sheila Boaz, Grimm's girlfriend, told police Grimm had entered the river to retrieve a fishing pole that a friend had lost. She told authorities Grimm was a good swimmer.
Divers searched the water until midnight when the search was called off due to poor visibility. The search resumed at 9 a.m. May 9. Personnel found the body in 13 feet of swift water, Phelps said.
Grimm was pronounced dead at the scene by Sharp County deputy coroners Randy and Tim McComas.
Cherokee Village Water Rescue, Highland Water Rescue, Spring River Ambulance and the Sharp County Sheriff's Office also assisted with the search.
