Members of the Missouri State University-West Plains club golf team completed their spring schedule at the William Jewell Invitational April 12 and 13 at the Claycrest Golf Club in Liberty, Mo., but it didn't feel much like spring on the links, volunteer coach Phil Wade said.
"We found ourselves going to Wal-Mart to buy some stocking caps," he said, explaining the event took place during "extreme" winter weather conditions and high winds.
But a couple of former Thayer Bobcat standouts overcame the conditions to finish in the top 20, Wade said.
"Layne Hawkins of Thayer played very well. He finished eleventh in the medalist race with a two-day score of 156," Wade said. "M.J. Clark, also of Thayer, had an excellent outing, finishing in the top 20."
Other club team members competing in the event included Jordan Slayton from Mountain Grove; Brett Ward of Thayer; and Ben Knight from West Plains.
Wade said he was very pleased with his golfers' efforts this first season. "They exceeded my expectations. These young men met all of the objectives I set for them," he said. "One of the things in my philosophy that is very important, is that these players are student-athletes, and not only did they excel on the golf course, they excelled in the classroom, too."
Members of the club team will now begin preparing for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Men's Golf Championship set for May 20-25 at the Goose Pond Colony Resort in Scottsboro, Ala. "I'm excited about our players going to the national tournament," Wade said. "This is a great opportunity for these young men to compete for a national championship."
Wade said he'd also like to thank the community for its support of the club team during its inaugural season.
"We made great strides this season, thanks to the support of the community. Without that, it would have been impossible for us to compete," he said. "I'm looking forward to a new season and some new faces on our team."
