Nima Jean Payne, 73, of West Plains, Mo., died July 23, 2004, at her home. She was born Aug. 5, 1930, at Alicia, Ark., the daughter of the late Kergle Arvest and Lois Ardell Montgomery York.

She graduated from Salem High School at Salem, Ark., and on Nov. 13, 1949, married Verlin Leland Payne at Sturkie, Ark. He preceded her in death Dec. 17, 1997.

She worked for ten years at International Shoe Company and operated the Salem Coffee Shop for many years. She also did housekeeping for many families in the West Plains area prior to her retirement.

She loved getting together with her family to fish, play dominoes and visit and loved to travel and attend church. She was a member of the Moko Church of Christ at Moko, Ark.

Survivors include her children -- Judy Dixon and husband, Joe Bill of West Plains, Carl Gene Payne of Cameron, Mo., Lois Elaine Payne of West Plains, and Debbie Smith of Caulfield, Mo.; eight grandchildren -- Greg Dixon and wife, Jamie, Michael Norton and wife, Tanya, Erin Schweiger, Chad Dixon and wife, Jessica, Daniel Norton, Jonathan Norton, Kristy Norton and Lincoln Joe Payne; four great-grandchildren -- Landon, Laban, Payton and Layne; five brothers -- Arvil York of Camp, Ark., Doyne York, Doyle York and wife, Jessie and Ron York all of West Plains, and Kay York of Lanton, Mo.; two sisters -- Irene Sanderson of Salem and Veda Morriston and husand, Clyde of Springfield, Mo.; one brother-in-law, Wayne McBurnett of Calhoun, Ga., and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one sister, Joy McBurnett.

The funeral was July 26 at Rose Chapel of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home with Hillard Story officiating. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery at Salem, Ark. Arrangements were by Robert-son-Drago Funeral Home.
