Candidates, amendments highlight ballot

OREGON COUNTY -- Election polls will open at 6 a.m. for the primary election in Oregon County Aug. 3

Several local and state candidates will be selected at the election as well as two state amendments.

Locally, incumbent Northern District Commissioner Buddy Wright will face challenger Dick Richardson of Alton.

Incumbent Oregon County Assessor Charles Alford will be on the ballot with Alton resident Jeff Holman.

Sheriff Tim Ward will face Democratic opponent Doug Fountain.

All of the local races will appear on the Democratic primary election ballot.

Several non-contested races will also appear on the ballot. They include: Southern District Commissioner John Wrenfrow; Circuit Clerk and Recorder Dorothy Barton; and Coroner Tom Clary.

District 153 state Rep. Mike Dethrow of Alton will face Gene Oalkey of Van Buren.

Two Republicans, Bernie Mowinski and Chuck Purgason, want to be state senator for District 33, as well as one Democrat, R.A. Pendergrass.

Two statewide issues will be on the primary ballot. Constitutional Amendment 1 will ask the voters of the state to authorize floating gambling facilities on the White River at Rockaway Beach.

Amendment 2 will ask voters to amend the constitution so that it recognizes marriage only between an men and a women.

Oregon County Clerk Gary Hensley said the polls in the county will close at 7 p.m.

The county clerk said he urges all registered voters to vote.
