The Arkansas State Youth Hunter Education Challenge was held June 4-5 at the 4-H Center in Little Rock, with 280 4-H'ers from ages 9 to 19 competing for various awards.
Competitions in four different areas were held: shotgun, rifle, muzzleloader, and archery.
Josiah Jones, son of Junior and Jolynn Jones of Salem, won first place in the archery discipline.
Jones was the high-scoring individual in the Senior Division. The competitors were required to shoot their way through a 30-target 3D archery course.
The competitors demonstrated their knowledge by judging target distance, locating the kill zone and making a shot that would score a 12, 10, 8 or 5.
Along with a trophy, Jones won a Hoyt UltraTech 3D archery bow.
Sponsors of the YHEC event were Friends of NRA, the Arkansas Chapter of The National Wild Turkey Federation, The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Extension Service and other contributors.
