Russell said the owner of a store called in a report at approximately 3:45 p.m. Thursday that the house across the street was on fire. Two pumpers and 14 firefighters responded to the scene at 500 Dixon St. and saw a house fire "fully-involved" when they arrived. They battled the blaze for several hours, but were unable to stop the destruction of the house and its contents.
The occupants of the house, three adults and two children, had already evacuated the "40s-style pine box house," which is a box-framed house with pine siding.
The origin of the fire was unknown at press time and is still under investigation.
