Greyhounds, Cougars fight into extra frame

Thursday, January 24, 2002

Brockwell -- What should and could have been an excellent night of basketball between Salem and ICC was turned into a good one with the first game of the night. With Salem leading in the junior girls' contest by the score of 20-3 with only two minutes to go before half, they were still applying a full-court press. Whether it was a case of oversight or one of spite from a former coach, it left a bad taste in the mouth for the following games.

In the senior girls' game, Heather Bales opened the game with a couple of points off a turnaround in the lane. Neither team could get more than a couple of points ahead of the other, and the first quarter ended with the Lady Cougars clinging to a 10-9 lead.

ICC extended their lead to 3 points when Jessica Sherrell opened the second quarter with a couple of free throws, but Salem charged back with Kimberly Taylor canning a short jumper and H. Bales hitting a jumper in the lane and then coming back with one of two charity tosses, taking a 14-12 lead.

The Lady Cougars kicked it in overdrive to finish the half, outscoring Salem 11-2, to take a 26-17 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Cougars got a couple of free throws and a jumper in the lane from Sherrell sandwiched around a shot down low from H. Bales, giving ICC a double digit lead.

Salem ripped off 4 quick points to keep them close, with A. Smith providing the punch, but ICC kept the pressure on. Sherrell hit a traditional 3-point play, and A. Smith could only put up two points for the Lady Greyhounds, leaving ICC with a 9-point lead.

After Sherrell swapped baskets with H. Bales, the Lady Cougars once again finished the quarter on a strong note. The Lady Cougars tacked on 6 unanswered points to close the third quarter with a 41-27 lead.

The Lady Greyhounds came without their "never-say-never" attitude in the fourth quarter, outscoring ICC 13-1 in the first half of the final stanza.

Leading only by 2 points, the Lady Cougars got a free throw from and a bucket to boost their lead to 45-40.

Salem outscored the Lady Cougars 12-7 the rest of the game, knotting the score at 52-all, sending the contest into an extra frame.

ICC drew first blood in the overtime with a pullup jumper off the baseline, but Salem took the lead with a couple of free throws by H. Bales and a stickback from Nicole Ellison to take the lead back.

After Mandy Haney drained a long range deuce to tie it back up at 56-56, A. Smith gave the Lady Greyhounds the lead for good with a 16 footer out of the left corner. The Lady Greyhounds finished with a couple of charity tosses from Tesa Bishop to set the final score of 60-57 in favor of Salem.

In the senior boys' game, it just got better. Leon Harvey nailed down Salem's first 4 points, but ICC used a trey from Joe Hawkins and a couple of baskets from Allen Roberts to go along with a stickback from Shane Irgens to take a 9-4 lead early on.

ICC swapped baskets with the Greyhounds, and led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Irgens hit a leaner from short range to put the Cougars up 15-9, but Justin Howell buried a trey from the right side to pull the Greyhounds to within 3 points.

After Rex Burrow hit a couple of charity tosses to open the Cougar lead to 5, Howell canned another trey and Jamie Sisk and Harvey each collected 2 points to put Salem in front 18-7. The Cougars retook the lead with a Roberts free throw and a Josh Jackson buzzer-beater out of the right corner to take a 21-18 halftime lead.

ICC burst out on a 10-4 run on the start the third quarter to take a 31-22 lead. It looked like the Greyhounds had run out of gas. Sisk came through and started the Greyhounds on their way back with a couple of free throws and then a stickback to pull Salem to within 5 points.

The scoring stayed pretty even throughout the rest of the quarter, and ICC took a 37-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Greyhounds started with a 7-5 run to pull to within a single point of the Cougars, but a couple of charity tosses from Roberts and a floater down the lane by Irgens put ICC back up 46-41.

Rusty Perkins started the Greyhound comeback with a couple of free throws, and then Sisk added a bucket and Garrett Kissinger added a couple of free throws to give the Salem the lead at 47-46. Rusty Perkins hit one more free throws for the Greyhounds with :17 seconds on the clock to put Salem up two, but Hawkins came down and drove the right baseline and hit the tough shot in the lane to tie the game at the buzzer, sending it into overtime.

Hawkins set the tone in overtime with an NBA range 3-pointer from the left side, then followed up with one of two free throws to stake the Cougars to a 52-48 lead.

Howell hit a couple of free throws for the Greyhounds, and then Sisk knotted things back up at 52-52 with 2:20 to go in overtime.

ICC used the clock to their advantage, and Hawkins put the Cougars on top by 2 with a couple of free throws with 47 seconds left. Sisk was cool as could be and showed no fear when he put a spin move on the defender and hit the jumper off the right side of the lane to send the game into the second overtime with the score 54-54.

It was all ICC in the second overtime frame. Robbie Morgan hit a slicing backdoor layup off the Hawkins feed, then a layup of the breakaway, putting the Cougars up 58-54. Hawkins made a steal at half-court and took it back for the lay up to set the final score of 60-54 in favor of ICC in double overtime.
