Grizzlies hire part-time director of basketball operations/assistant coach

Thursday, July 8, 2004

The Southwest Missouri State University-West Plains Grizzly Basketball staff is now complete with the hiring of Robbie Bates of Laddonia, Mo., as director of basketball operations/assistant coach.

Grizzly Head Coach Brian Ostermann said Bates started his duties in the part-time position July 1.

"Although Robbie has been hired in a part-time capacity, he will be very involved in every aspect of our basketball program," Ostermann said. "As director of basketball operations, his primary responsibility will be directing the office."
Bates has nearly 10 years of experience in collegiate basketball operations. He served as manager of the men's basketball program at Moberly Area Community College in Moberly from 1995 to 1998, as a student assistant men's basketball coach at Columbia College in Columbia from 1999 to 2002 and as a graduate assistant men's basketball coach at Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Ky., from 2002 to present. Some of his responsibilities at these programs has been recruiting, scouting opponents, on-court coaching, player development, film exchange, team statistics and various office duties.
Bates holds an associate of arts degree from Moberly Area Community College, a bachelor of arts degree in secondary education from Columbia College, and a master of arts degree in secondary education from Cumberland College.
"Robbie will do an excellent job for Grizzly Basketball. Robbie is from Moberly and has three years of experience in Region 16 basketball. His experience with Missouri basketball and his extensive background in computers and office work make him a great fit for our Grizzly basketball staff," Ostermann said.

Bates will join Ostermann and assistant head coach Chad Ostermann on the bench this season.

"I really believe we have assembled a top-notch staff for a program of our size," Brian Ostermann said. "I think Chad and Robbie will complement each other very well. Both believe in our basketball philosophy and will support the goals of SMS-West Plains."
