Sharp jailer awarded for heroic actions

Thursday, February 14, 2002

Sharp County Dispatch-er/Matron Elaine Moody received one of the highest honors bestowed by the Arkansas Sheriff's Association Jan. 29 when she was presented the medal of valor.

Moody received the award for her heroic actions on Sept. 4 when she prevented an inmate from escaping and saved the life of Jailer Mike Stone.

According to Moody, the incident took place in the early morning hours when one of the inmates called for Stone to come back into the jail. She said though she couldn't explain exactly what it was, something about the call made her uneasy. She said shortly after Stone entered the jail she heard a noise and went to investigate.

What she saw spurred her into quick action -- one of the inmates had Stone on the ground and was choking him. His face was all bloody and Moody said it was apparent he was close to being choked to death. Moody said she screamed at the inmate to let Stone go and started kicking him. Eventually she was able to dislodge the inmate and Stone was finally able to get up. The inmate was put back into his cell and Moody called for medical assistance for Stone.

"Mike is just like one of my kids," said Moody. "This is like a small family here and we take care of each other."Moody said she was honored to receive the award but said she was just doing her job. "It's wonderful -- I don't have the words to say how grateful I am," she said.
