Hardin Davis Franks, 94, was born April 1, 1908, the son of Robert Hardin "Bob" and Nannie Belle Bear Franks, near Thomasville, Mo., and died Sept. 17, 2002, at Shepherd's View Care Facility, Alton, Mo.He graduated from Thomasville High School in 1926. He worked for his uncle, Sid Franks, in a hardware store in Thayer. He then worked for his brother in the hardware business in Koshkonong and Mountain Grove and for Simmons Hardware Co. of St. Louis. On Jan. 23, 1937, he was married to Mary Frances Jones in Springfield, Mo. He owned and operated Hardin Franks Hardware in Alton from 1938 through 1973. He was also the Oregon County Permit Agent for the Department of Conservation for 33 years. After his retirement from the hardware business, Franks was elected Oregon County Presiding Judge and served in that position for two terms.He was a member of the Alton United Methodist Church, Alton Masonic Lodge, A.F. &A.M., the Order of the Eastern Star, and had been a charter member of the Alton Rotary Club. He served several terms as Mayor of Alton, and also served on the Alton School Board of Education.Survivors include five grandchildren, Bill Young Jr., Laurel Johnson, Frank Young, and Anne Oesch, all of Alton, and Paul Young of West Plains; six great-grandchildren; three nieces and one nephew.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his daughter, Mary Alice Franks Young; and six brothers, Everett, Paul, Arthur, Duke, and Wallace, and an infant.Services were Sept. 20, at the Alton United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Frey officiating. Burial was in the Smith Cemetery at Alton, with arrangements under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home of Alton.
