John Ab Short, age 88 of Joplin, Mo., died Aug. 16, 2007, at Freeman West Hospital.
He was born Sept. 17, 1918, in Sturkie, Ark. He was the son of Joe Ab and Minnie (Jones) Short, the youngest of 13 brothers and sisters.
John moved to Joplin in 1997, after living in Tahlequah, Okla., and West Plains, Mo., for many years. He was a farmer and owned several farms located near Caruthersville and Parma in the bootheel region of Missouri.
In addition to farming, John was involved in the wholesale gas business. He owned and operated a service station and three Western Auto stores in Southeast Missouri.
He married his wife, Norma (Asher) Short in Pocahontas, Ark., in 1939. They remained married for 62 years until her death on Dec. 10, 2002. He was a member of the congregation at Mt. Hope Church of Christ in Webb City, Mo. John had two children.
His was preceded in death by a son Johnny Ray Short.
He is survived by: a daughter, Ruth Eleen (Short) Boehning; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Parker Mortuary on Aug. 19.
