Thayer FCCLA works hard

Thursday, July 1, 2004

THAYER -- Since the beginning of school last fall, Thayer FCCLA members have been working to raise money to attend the National Cluster Meeting in Jacksonville, Fla. They may have been spotted at the Thayer Wal-Mart working at the car wash and at Thayer High school working at one of the two yard sales they had. All of their hard work paid off when they loaded the tour buses and headed for Florida.

From Region there were six schools, including Thayer, that attended the conference. Those attending from Thayer include: Summer Jones, Megan Underwood, Jessica Barton, Stephanie Cash, Sarah Jo Prewitt, Savannah Dills, Valerie Dixon, Jessica Cates, Tiffany Poulette, Saren Thompson and Kristin Martin. Shelley Underwood, chapter advisor, and Janie Thompson chaperoned the girls on their trip.

The chapter officers attended different workshops that focused on how to be leaders in society, and at jobs, and how to take a stand against youth violence. The main meeting focused on developing leadership skills. There were three different motivational speakers and each showed the FCCLA members different ways to achieve lifelong and short term goals.

The opening meeting consisted of a skit that showed how to not be a good leader. It was a spinoff from on the hit television show "American Idol." There were three FCCLA members on stage who knew nothing about being a leader but they all wanted to win the title of American Leader. At the closing of the meeting each of the three members learned through various workshops that took place during the weekend how to become great leaders and they each gained the recognition as American Leader.

The Thayer FCCLA officers also made a few side trips during the trip.

They spent half of the day in the historic St. Augustine and had the opportunity to stop by the St Augustine Beach and the Jacksonville Beach.
